What Is Junji Ito’s Uzumaki About?
Uzumaki is set in a small town named Kurouzu-cho on the coast of Japan. The story revolves around a teenager named Kirie Goshima, her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito, and the citizens of the town. Kirie and Shuichi soon realize that the town is haunted by supernatural spirals. The duo witnesses how the spiral curse starts driving people crazy and even becomes the focus of their lives. The community slowly breaks down as the curse starts spreading like a deadly plague and engulfs Kurouzu-cho. Even Kirie is struck by the curse as her hair begins to curl into bizarre spirals that start hypnotizing others. If she attempts to slice them off, they choke her, as it is like they have a mind of their own. However, Shuichi manages to cut her hair and save her. Meanwhile, the curse continues to torment the small town until one day, a storm created by the curse ends up destroying most of the buildings. Shuichi and Kirie are stuck in the town and have no way of escaping the horror of the spiral. The Uzumaki manga has been a successful hit, enough to receive an anime adaptation by studio Drive. The anime was initially confirmed to release in October 2022, but it has been delayed indefinitely at the staff’s request. READ MORE: The Best Horror Anime to Watch in 2022
