In a recent interview with Deadline, director Joseph Kosinski addressed whether or not a third Top Gun film was a possibility, saying that if only they could find a story worth telling, that would be the impetus for another sequel.

“Is there another story that is compelling enough that we need to go back?” he asked. “It seems to me at the end of this film that Maverick has some gas left in the tank. He’s not settling down.”

This encouraging comment from the director echoed the sentiments of one of the sequel’s stars, Miles Teller, who disclosed in July that he had discussed the possibility of a blockbuster sequel with Tom Cruise.

“That would be great, but that’s all up to TC,” Teller commented at the time. “It’s all up to Tom. I’ve been having some conversations with him about it. We’ll see.. For him to share Top Gun with me and a lot of these other young actors it’s just been such a wild ride, and it’s still going.”

On Thursday, the National Board of Review announced that Top Gun: Maverick has earned the New York-based film association’s honors for the best film of 2022, fueling its engine’s chances to race in the upcoming Oscars.

Since its theatrical debut, Maverick has consistently broken box office records and obtained a worldwide gross of $1.4 billion. It passed Avengers: Infinity War at the domestic box office to become the sixth-highest grossing movie ever in North America. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer explained why he believes the action drama has managed to overtake Marvel and DC despite the reputation of these franchises.

“The audiences love Marvel, they love the DC stuff. They’re beautifully made by really talented people. [But] sometimes you want to see something that’s real, and that’s what Top Gun gave us,” said the producer.

Maverick is the long-awaited sequel to the original 1986 Top Gun, which featured Tom Cruise as the titular Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Over 30 years after the events of the original movie, this sequel follows Maverick after he is enlisted to train a new generation of pilots. In addition to Cruise and Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm also starred in the new Top Gun movie.
