Quentin Tarantino recently added his voice to the discourse as he recently made a comment about how Marvel actors are not actually movie stars. As expected, it received a variety of responses on the internet with some agreeing to his comment while there are some who also criticized his views including one of the current main stars of the MCU, Simu Liu. The Shang-Chi star tweeted his reaction to Tarantino’s comments on Twitter where he called him and Martin Scorsese, who has also been critical of Marvel movies, “gatekeepers” as he claimed that they would never give an opportunity for someone like him to star in a movie. He also commended Marvel Studios for their efforts on diversity and representation.
“If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom came from Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have had the opportunity to lead a $400 million plus movie,” he wrote. “I am in awe of their filmmaking genius. They are transcendent auteurs. But they don’t get to point their nose at me or anyone.” The actor continued, “No movie studio is or ever will be perfect. But I’m proud to work with one that has made sustained efforts to improve diversity onscreen by creating heroes that empower and inspire people of all communities everywhere. I loved the ‘Golden Age’ too.. but it was white as hell.” Liu’s post has drawn mixed reactions so far on social media. While there are some who supported his views, it also received some backlash from people who pointed out that Scorsese and Tarantino are champions of world cinema and argued that Marvel and Disney are more gatekeepers to today’s cinema.
