Daemon Targaryen is a man who has a lot of potential but mostly in a negative way. Although he is a prince and a potential heir to Paddy Considine’s King Viserys I Targaryen, Daemon also happens to be a danger to the Realm because of his unpredictable nature. The unpredictability is something that Matt Smith has embraced in House of the Dragon.
“Daemon is there to cause chaos and piss people off because, simply, it entertains him,” Smith told Empire. He then points out that his character is set for a tense power struggle involving his brother and Rhys Ifans’ Hand Of The King, Otto Hightower.
“[Daemon] and Otto loathe one another,” Smith stated. “They’re winding each other up, needling one another. And in the middle of it is Paddy, who plays Viserys. They’re both vying for his attention and his love.”
Not surprisingly, Rhys Ifans agrees with Smith, claiming that Daemon is “the king’s kryptonite.”
“[Daemon is] volatile, violent and impulsive. Any influence he has on the king is detrimental to the status quo,” Ifans said. With that in mind, Daemon is certainly someone to be wary of in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series.
House of the Dragon will also star Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower and Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, the two women who are caught in the middle of the Dance of the Dragons. The series will premiere on HBO on August 21, 2022.
