In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the I, Tonya star approved the casting of the Born This Way singer and tried to hype her up as best she could, “I think she’s going to do an amazing job. I’m so excited, it’s all I could’ve ever hoped for Harley was that she would become one of those characters, kinda like Batman or Hamlet, that gets handed from actor to actor, everyone gets a go at playing them. So, I think it’s just a credit to her as a character that people want to see her in multiple iterations.”
Harley Quinn made her debut in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. She is presented as the Joker’s devoted henchman and ultimately one-sided romantic girlfriend, which gained her popular attention. As the story progresses, the anti-hero escapes her toxic relationship with the Joker and explores her bisexuality with Poison Ivy, another Gotham bad girl. Robbie brought Harley Quinn to life in 2016’s Suicide Squad. Her run as the bubbly and deranged woman became popular among fans, which makes her the real holder of the role’s mantle. With that, the character received her own spin-off film with Birds of Prey, where Robbie reprises the role and later plays Harley once more in The Suicide Squad, a soft reboot of the first film.
In September, DC Studios big boss James Gunn hinted at the return of Robbie’s Harley Quinn by subtly responding to a tweet, “Will Harley Quinn return in the DCEU?” Gunn replied with a simple “Yes.” This is to follow his comment months ago that bringing back the Barbie star wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
In October, The Wolf of Wall Street shared her insights on why Harley is lovable despite her questionable personality and choices. She hinted that Harley being attracted to the Joker is an indication that she is aware of her own brokenness.
“People seem to really respond to her sense of humor. She has this unflappable sense of humor, and to the fact that she loves a madman. They love the fact that she has this unconditional loyalty and love for a guy that treats her like s***.” she said.
