What Is Lycoris Recoil About?
Lycoris Recoil tells the story of mismatched duo Chisato and Takina, and their double lives as staff at Café LycoReco, and as Lycoris, secret agents tasked with keeping Japan suspiciously peaceful. Chisato, with her superhuman bullet-dodging ability, is known as the top Lycoris in Japan. This is why no one seems to mind that she’s given special benefits such as working remotely at the café instead of from the HQ and being able to use non-lethal bullets specially made for her when gunning bad guys down. The reason behind Chisato’s active abstinence from taking lives has been revealed to have stemmed from the belief that she had been given a second life to help people and not kill them. One of Lycoris Recoil’s main conflict is how Chisato’s ideal clashes directly with the mission given to her when she was saved by the secretive Alan Institute as a child. Even after finding out the truth about her connection with the Alan Institute’s Shinji Yoshimatsu, Chisato still refuses to kill, even at the cost of her own life. But Takina and the rest of the LycoReco staff, whom Chisato has formed deep bonds with, won’t allow her to die without putting up a fight. Lycoris Recoil Episode 12 Recap
Episode 12 of LycoReco picked up on the battle at the old radio tower between Chisato, Takina, and Majima from the previous episode. After Chisato took away the advantage of Majima’s razor-sharp hearing, the two girls ended up stopping him. Though Majima managed to escape after the two left. Around the same time, the Lily Bells, who are the male counterpart of the Lycoris, were given a mission to kill off the agents at the new Enkuboku tower, after their identities had been revealed. Chisato went to look for Shinji, who then tried but failed to manipulate Chisato into killing. Takina, who was eavesdropping on the conversation, came out and threatened to shoot Shinji if he didn’t hand over the suitcase that carried the only other artificial heart that could extend Chisato’s life. Shinji revealed that in a desperate move to try and get Chisato to kill, he had switched out his own real heart for the artificial one. Chisato could only live if she killed Shinji. This didn’t weaken Chisato’s resolve, though it enraged Takina. Shinji’s personal assassin/assistant came out of nowhere and attacked Takina. Chisato was put to the ultimate test when Shinji shot at Takina, and only then was she able to shoot Shinji with a real gun. Chisato was careful not to fatally shoot Shinji, however, and let him and the assassin escape. An almost-frenzied Takina attempted to go after them, only to be stopped by Chisato. After a hearty talk, the duo was picked up by Mizuki and Kurumi in a helicopter. The four girls carried on an anonymously given mission to save the Lycoris who were about to be killed at the new tower. Walnut’s return came at the perfect time. Kurumi shut down Robota’s activities and took over the public broadcast, covering the unfortunate incident as a complex marketing ploy for the newly opened tower. This led to the Lily Bells falling back and the Lycoris were spared from being unfairly eliminated. However, just as things seemed to have settled down, Majima reappeared and managed to isolate Chisato. Needless to say, so much has happened in Episode 12 that it’s hard to comprehend how the creators managed to fit it all in 24 minutes. The next episode is likely to focus on a final face-off between the two Alan children with extraordinary abilities. With the subtle dropping of hints as to Chisato’s tragic demise in the previous episodes, this development was the least surprising. Still, fans had hoped that the blatant display of the famous anime death flower (the Red Spider Lily, which has a scientific name of Lycoris radiata), hinted at a happy plot twist and that no one was going to die. Lycoris Recoil being an original anime is both a great and unfortunate thing, with no one knowing what else could happen in the first season’s last 24 minutes. Hopefully, the anime getting a manga adaptation and a spin-off light novel means Chisato gets to live beyond the two months she was told she has left. After all, many of the questions fans have about the show have not yet been answered, like whether Chisato and Takina would ever end up in a romantic relationship together.
