Is The Stranger Based on a True Story?
The Stranger is a series that was based on a true crime case about the murder of 13-year-old, Daniel Morcombe. The murder has been written into a book by Kate Kyriacou entitled The Sting: The Undercover Operation That Caught Daniel Morcombe’s Killer. The 13-year-old was abducted on Sunshine Coast in Queensland in December 2003 as he was on his way to a shopping centre. Later on, it was discovered that Morcombe was murdered by Brett Peter Cowan. He was caught in August 2011 and convicted for murder in 2014. The operation saw Cowan get lured in by the fake crime gang that was run by a man called “Mr. Big.” This is seen throughout the show. However, the abduction and murder of Morcombe is not seen in the series. The names in the series have been changed so it’s now a fictionalized version.
