Netflix released High Water on October 5, 2022 without much publicity beforehand. This is why it comes as a complete surprise that the show has ranked high in just a few days. With the rising water levels, many can’t help but relate to the show’s story and wonder how it changed the course of the countries involved. The show is composed of six episodes in total that is about 45 minutes long for every episode.
What is High Water About?
The official synopsis of High Water reads: “In 1997, scientists and local government officials in Wroclaw face life-and-death decisions when a destructive flood wave threatens the city.” The show is a political drama that reveals the real-life destruction of the flash flood and how it affected the lives of the citizens forever.
Are Jakub and Jasmina Real?
While High Water is inspired by the real events that took place in 1997, the characters in the show are fictional. This means that the characters Jakub (played by Tomasz Schuchardt) and Jasmina (played by Agnieszka Zulewska) are not real. But they may very much be, especially since 56 people lost their lives in the Polish flood and almost 40,000 people lost their livelihoods and material belongings. The flooding was also estimated to have caused a loss of 12 billion PLN. Apart from Poland, the flood also affected parts of the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, and Austria.
