The screenplay was written by Babaloo Mandel and Lowell Ganz from Kelly Candaele and Kim Wilson’s stories. The new series is actually considered as a spiritual spin-off or reimagining of the 1992 film. While the series features the same All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), its characters aren’t the same and are not connected to the classic film.

Not entirely. Both the movie and the series based the plot on the lives of the actual female ball players of the All-American Girl Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). The league actually started to keep the pastime alive at a time when the men were called to serve during the second World War. The characters and storyline in both the movie and series have been fictionalized.

In its official synopsis, the show is explained as: “A League of Their Own evokes the joyful spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic, while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. We’re secretly hoping other original cast members will be making an appearance, such as Madonna, Geena Davis, and Tom Hanks. But so far, there’s no word on whether this will be happening. We’re ready for a good surprise though!
