It has already been confirmed that House of the Dragon will be based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire and Blood and will take place 200 years before the events in Game of Thrones. As confirmed in the trailers, the series will introduce new characters who are mostly from the House Targaryen. But despite being ancestors of Daenerys Targaryen, Martin says that these characters won’t be as “universally loved” as the youngest Stark daughter.
Martin recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about House of the Dragon, which he described as being fairly different from Game of Thrones.
“It’s powerful, it’s visceral, it’s dark, it’s like a Shakespearean tragedy,” Martin said. He then continued to talk about the new characters in the show.
“There’s no Arya — a character everybody’s going to love. They’re all flawed. They’re all human. They do good things. They do bad things. They’re driven by lust for power, jealousy, old wounds — just like human beings. Just like I wrote them,” Martin said.
It’s an interesting way to describe the new Targaryens who will appear in House of the Dragon. Although they won’t be as beloved as the feisty Arya Stark, there is still a lot to expect from these characters and we can’t wait to learn about their story next month.
House of the Dragon will finally premiere on HBO on August 21, 2022.
