Enola Holmes is based on the book of the same name by Nancy Springer but this time, Enola Holmes 2, the sequel will not only have a taste of the books but it also includes a real historical event: the Matchgirls Strike of 1888 as shared by the director, Harry Bradbeer, in an interview with Deadline. Bradbeer revealed, “When we hit on the historical period, the idea of the matchgirls’ strike seemed to be a perfect way of telling a story about sisterhood and union and having the courage to stand up.” “We developed the script together, and as we talked about the story, we wanted to find a way that brought Enola into contact with a whole new world and a whole new range of young women and girls,” Bradbeer added.
Millie Bobby Brown who plays the titular character, Enola Holmes, also shared her positive response to the idea, “When Harry pitched me the idea, I thought, “Oh my gosh, I’m going to be working with more women–that’s perfect.” This is exactly what I wanted the film to be about. I don’t mind not being the only one.” Millie added her excitement on having more women in the film, “I really want others to be a part of the film. And I think for me to be able to have Sharon, Serrana, and Susie and Helena back, I was sold the first second he told me. I was very excited.” Enola Holmes 2 will have the titular character trying to establish her very own detective agency in hopes of having a name of her own in the industry and escaping the shadows of his infamous brother, Sherlock.
