Who is Kite in Hunter x Hunter?
Kite (pronounced Kaito in the original Japanese) is a Hunter. He was a student of Ging Freecss, Gon’s father.
While Kite might initially appear to be a stoic and cold person, he shows hidden depths as he deeply cares about both animals and people.
Kite and Gon cross paths before the Hunter Exam. Kite rescues Gon, and he’s the one who informs him that his father Ging didn’t die.
From there on, Kite and Gon meet on several different occasions, particularly when Gon completes the Greed Island game in an attempt to track his father.
Does Kite Die in Hunter x Hunter?
In a violent conflict with Neferpitou during the Chimera Ant arc, Kite ends up dying. Close to the Chimera Ant nest, the Ant in question shows up and severs Kite’s right arm. Kite then uses his Nen ability to make a weapon appear and thus buy some time for Gon and Killua -who are also there -to escape. Kite isn’t so lucky, however. Unable to defeat the Chimera Ant Kite is killed by Neferpitou.
Does Kite Get Reborn in Hunter x Hunter?
While Kite does die in Hunter x Hunter this wasn’t the last we saw of him. In many fantasy anime - and not only - death is less permanent than it is in reality. Because Neferpitou enjoyed fighting Kite, they don’t feed Kite’s body to the Chimera Ant Queen as per the original plan. Kite’s body is reanimated and used as a training dummy for new Ant recruits. As for Kite’s consciousness, he gets reincarnated in the body of a baby girl. At first, Kite has no past memories, but this changes later on. However, Kite’s self-perception after the reincarnation is not really expanded on. As such, Kite’s gender identity is left ambiguous and fans often use gender-neutral pronouns to refer to this character.
Kite’s Death Explained
Kite’s death and reincarnation might seem mysterious and a bit hard to grasp. There are different fan theories as to why this happened. Some fans on Reddit theorize that at some point the Ant Queen devoured a red-headed girl similar to Kite’s reincarnation, while Kite’s brain remained intact. This doesn’t fully explain why Kite got reincarnated as a little girl, though other forum users find the theory plausible. The only thing Kite shares with the girl is her appearance, as, eventually, Kite’s memories return, and, while there’s plenty of room for theorizing, the important part is the character’s return!
