He will be fighting Night City’s most notorious criminals and cyber-psychods in his mission to become a so-called legend. All 10 episodes of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 1 are now available to stream on Netflix, but will the streamer release another season in the future? Keep on reading to find out the latest updates.
Has Netflix renewed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners for Season 2?
While CD Projekt Red has expressed plans to expand the world of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher outside of the videogames, there are currently no plans for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2. Netflix, Studio Trigger, and CD Projekt Red haven’t announced any plans to produce more episodes of this anime series, and it’s likely that Edgerunners will only have one season. The sci-fi anime has always been advertised as a standalone story, and Studio Trigger is known for producing anime shows that only last for one season. However, due to the massive popularity of Cyberpunk 2077 and the positive reviews for Edgerunners (100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes), there will likely be a demand for more episodes. If the anime performs well on the streaming service, it’s likely that Netflix will consider renewing the show for Season 2, but for now, we’ll have to wait and see. On Sept. 16, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners didn’t make it to Netflix’s Top 10 global chart for TV shows, but it made it to Top 10 rankings in several countries, so at the time of this writing, it’s unclear if Netflix considers the anime’s performance reasonable enough to be renewed. Edgerunners also helped boost sales for Cyberpunk 2077. After the premiere of the anime, CD Projekt’s RPG sold past 20 million copies, and the official Twitter page for the game shared a message to thank the fans:
Spoiler Alert: The protagonist David ends up getting killed by Adam Smasher in the final episode of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as Lucy and Falco make their escape. Although the story is considered a standalone, we could see the story for the potential second season focus more on Lucy and other characters’ perspectives. Satoru Honma, a Japanese executive with CD Projekt Red, talked to Famitsu about Cyberpunk in an interview, and it was there the executive admitted that there are no plans to make Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2. According to Honma, Edgerunners was planned as a standalone project from its inception. “However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background’,” the exec said. “I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback,” Honma added. “Even if we could make more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be Season 2 or something completely different.” With the exception of sci-fi mecha anime SSSS.Dynazenon, Studio Trigger rarely makes follow-up seasons for its titles regardless of how popular they are. Though there are no plans for another season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Honma said he’d personally like to continue producing anime projects in the future with Japanese studios because of the positive feedback Edgerunners received. CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger clearly have no plans to make Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2. For now, you can check out Netflix’s list of upcoming films and TV shows in November 2022.
Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners getting a new season after the release of Cyberpunk 2077 sequel?
In early October 2022, developer CD Projekt Red officially announced the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion. The developer shared a description for the sequel: “Orion is a codename for our next Cyberpunk game, which will take the Cyberpunk franchise further and continue harnessing the potential of this dark future universe.” Now, fans of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are wondering if CD Projekt Red will collaborate with Studio Trigger once again to create a new season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners or a totally different anime set in Night City and the rest of the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. Although CDPR hasn’t mentioned any plans for an upcoming Cyberpunk anime, the confirmation of a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel certainly increases the chances of the popular franchise to get another anime series in the future. However, since the videogame sequel is not expected to release until 2025 or later, don’t expect a new Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season anytime soon.
