Speaking recently with The Hollywood Reporter, Maridueña recalled his meeting with current (and soon-to-exit) DC Films head Walter Hamada prior to his casting in the role and revealed that the hero is being set up as an important part of the DCEU.
“Look Xolo, This role of Blue Beetle is going to be really important to this universe,” Maridueña recalled Hamada’s words to him. “We want to just make sure that whoever we go with is a real person and we’re not just hiring a face. It’s about more than what’s in front of the camera.”
The Cobra Kai star also revealed in the interview that he was cast in the role without going through an audition process or reading any single line of dialogue which indicates that he was their actual choice to play the hero.
The film recently wrapped production last July ahead of its release in late summer next year. While the studio has not released any official still photos or videos, there are set photos that have surfaced online which gave us a look at the character’s comic-accurate costume.
It is interesting to hear that Blue Beetle is going to be an important part of the DCEU’s future which should be exciting for fans who have been looking forward to the character’s debut in the franchise and hope that he will have a bigger role moving forward.
However, considering that it was Hamada who gave the statement, there is a chance that the new management under Warner Bros. Discovery will change their plans for the character now that they have a new ten-year plan for the DCEU franchise. Hopefully, Maridueña’s Blue Beetle is still going to be part of their plan in the future after the film next year.
