Now that some time has passed since the cancellation, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah looked back at the experience in their recent interview with Deadline at the Red Sea International Film Festival while promoting another film that they helmed. “It was a traumatic experience,” Fallah said. “At that time, it was pretty unprecedented, so it was like movie history, but in a crazy way,” El Arbi added before noting that they were far from done by that point. “There was still a lot of work to be done but they just said it was financial decisions and so that’s that and the movie can never be released.” Fallah also expressed that they felt bad for the cast and crew who were involved in the making of the film. “But we got so much support from the whole industry from directors to screenwriters to studio people that really supported us through this really difficult time and that we felt that we were not alone, and that’s positive,” he said.
When asked whether there is the likelihood that we will see any of the footage from the film, the duo shot down the possibility. “There’s nothing that we can do to influence them but you know when you see Brendan Fraser, who’s maybe going to win an Oscar for The Whale, it’s like maybe that’s going to help us out because he gave an Oscar-winning performance,” El Arbi explained. “Should it maybe be released, there’s still a lot of work to be done and I don’t know if they are really going to go back for that.” You can tell by their comments that they were really disappointed with the situation, especially since they worked hard on making the film for months and all their work was obliterated in just a snap. While it is unlikely that we will see any footage of the film, who knows, maybe DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran will include the hero in their DCU plan and it would be interesting to see if they’ll cast Leslie Grace if ever it happens.
