Tokyo Mew Mew New is a reboot of the classic Tokyo Mew Mew anime. Both fantasy anime have the same characters and story. Of course, there are some changes, especially in terms of animation, but it appears that this reboot is as successful as other reboots like Fruits Basket. With its popularity, new fans who were not able to watch the original Tokyo Mew Mew anime have noticed that it has a similar title to Mew Mew Power, which was released from 2005 to 2006. In this article, we will settle this debate once and for all.
Are Tokyo Mew Mew and Mew Mew Power Related?
Mew Mew Power is the English version of Tokyo Mew Mew. The dubbed version is licensed by 4Kids Entertainment and has 23 episodes, while other countries have 26 episodes. Unfortunately, the series was dropped from the 4Kids block which made some international fans sad. Supposedly, Tokyo Mew Mew and Mew Mew Power are the same series, but with different dubs. However, 4Kids censored it so much to the point that the plot is nearly different from the original. One example was when Aoyama (Mark in Mew Mew Power) was glad when he found out that Ichigo (Zoey in Mew Mew Power) is a Mew Mew. The pilot episode of Mew Mew Power disregarded this fact. There were also a lot of cat puns added in the series to add humor, and not only were the characters’ names changed but also the weapons’ names.
Which Version Is Better: Tokyo Mew Mew or Mew Mew Power?
While Mew Mew Power attracts western audiences because of its language, Tokyo Mew Mew is still the original anime. The intention of the fantasy series is emphasized in the original anime which is why it is no longer a surprise that it received a reboot series. Mew Mew Power is also incomplete as 4Kids failed to acquire the license for the remaining episodes. It is for this reason that fans who wish to find out the entire story should consider watching Tokyo Mew Mew instead.
